Sometimes, people are not who they truly seem. Even the beggars we see outside might have a different story to tell. This is what a woman uncovered after talking with a homeless man she met. Faye Areas was strolling in the mall when she was approached by a man.
The man was Jansen Losin, a 70-year-old homeless beggar who was roaming the mall to ask for alms. What piqued Faye's interest was Mang Jansen's perfect English grammar! "Please don't get mad. And Sorry to bother you but I'm not gonna ask for money, I'll be asking for food to eat 'coz I'm hungry."
Faye took Mang Jansen to a fast food chain. Over a meal, Mang Jansen revealed that he used to be a professor in Ateneo de Manila and University of the Philippines. He flew to Cebu for a business venture, sadly it went bankrupt which led him to roam the streets. He tried asking for help but to no avail.
During the brief moment that they are together, Faye has learned so much from the homeless man. She was amazed at his eloquence and knowledge of various topics such as economics, education, and history. He also gave a few words of wisdom to Faye:
"He told me to study well for education is very important. I admire tatays wittiness and he told me many things about economics. I was amazed of tatays sharp memory and with his fluent english. "
In the end, before they part ways, Faye gave Mang Jansen a bottle of water and money. At first, he was hesitant to accept the money, but Faye insisted and claimed it's only a small amount compared to what she learned from him. To further help him, Faye shared his story on Facebook.
As expected, thousands of people on Facebook were moved with the story. Some netizens in Cebu City even offered monetary assistance for Mang Jansen. We hope that he finally gets the help that he truly needs. Our community can use more people like Mang Jansen.
