A local man from Bali, Indonesia, is currently making news all over the globe. Wayan Sumardana is being hailed as the real-life "Iron Man" for creating a bionic arm from scratch! How did he do it with such limited resources? Find out the rest of his inspirational story here.
One fateful morning, he just woke up with no sensation on his left arm. After a trip to the hospital, the doctors couldn't figure out the cause of his arm numbness. A trip to the local shaman yielded no results either.
For many months, Wayan spiraled into hopelessness. But there's still light at the end of the tunnel. Using his knowledge of electrical engineering, Wayan created a device to help him move his arm.
Using scrap metals, lithium battery, and other electronic components, Wayan created a 'bionic arm.' The device is attached to his brain, where it supposedly sends electrical impulses to his brain. Thanks to this bionic arm, Wayan was able to resume to his daily routine.
While it might be fascinating for most people, some cast doubts upon the effectivity of Wayan's bionic arm. One mechanical engineering expert from the Udayana University was quoted as saying:
"It's a robot structure but there are some important components missing. He has a mechanical and electrical structure, but it doesn't have any computer coding. How can the machine recognize a command without computer programming?"
Despite the doubts cast upon Wayan's 'bionic arm,' what's important is how he managed to make something out of his situation. Up to this day, he is hailed as a talented artisan in their village!
