At least 8 people were injured in an explosion at a mosque in Barangay Talon-talon, Zamboanga City early Wednesday, police said.
Senior Supt. Thomas Joseph Martir, director of the Zamboanga City Police Office, said 2 of the victims are in critical condition.
Initial investigation showed that 2 unidentified men lobbed a grenade inside the mosque at Sitio Logoy Diutay past 12 a.m.
The victims, most of whom were Muslim preachers from Basilan and nearby provinces, were sleeping when the explosion occurred.
The perpetrators immediately fled on foot. Police are asking residents to help identify them. Metal and level fragments were recovered from the crime scene.
Senator Richard Gordon, chairman of the Philippine Red Cross (PRC), said they have deployed an ambulance at the site and are treating some of the victims.
The incident comes after the deadly blasts at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Jolo, Sulu on Sunday.
The attack, believed to have been carried out by a subgroup of Abu Sayyaf Group, killed at least 21 people and hurt more than 100 others.
