Meet NASA's First Filipina Head Engineer, Josephine Santiago-Bond!

Since the Spanish Colonization, Filipinas have been relegated to being housewives. But during the pre-colonial era, Filipino women are known to be fighters, fierce warriors who are at equal footing with men.

Now, several women are notable for their various achievements. In fact, some have been known to surpass men. These Filipinas serve to prove to the country and to the world that they are great and and awe-inspiring, too!

One Filipina is out to prove such belief after being appointed as the National Aeronautics and Space Administration's (NASA's) Head Engineer. She's none other than Engr. Josephine Santiago-Bond.

Josephine was born and raised in Antipolo, Philippines. She studied Electronics and Communication Engineering at the premiere university of the country, the University of the Philippines.

In an interview with the prestigious woman, she humbly admitted that mathematics was always a challenge for her.

“As a child, I always knew I would go to college, get a job, try to earn enough to afford the things I need and want, but I had not envisioned a particular profession.”

Since her parents worked as doctors abroad, Josephine moved to the United States after college and enrolled in South Dakota State University to get her Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering.

A teacher suggested that she should try and get a summer job at John F. Kennedy Space center, one of NASA's 10 space centers and everything else was history.

She is very proud of her achievements and has this to say about her work at NASA:

“I’m leading very diverse groups of people to bring their whole selves to work whole executing NASA’s mission, which ultimately benefits humankind.”

Keep up the good work, Josephine! Continue inspiring every little girl here in the Philippines! You certainly make us proud!
