People born with privilege need not be people who are seriously rich. You don't have to own a sports car, live in a mansion, or even have servants at your beck and call. Our privilege can be in the form of being able to eat three times a day, having the luxury of rest, and going to school.
Yes, education is a right of every person in the world. However, it's an uncomfortable truth that here in the Philippines it has become rather a luxury to send children to school even for the primary level. We do have public schools and state colleges but the expenses of studying is not limited to tuition. You need books, notebooks, pen, and paper, among other things.
That's why, for the poorest of the poor who don't even have enough to feed their children a proper meal, education is a choice they cannot make.
But this young boy by the name of Marlon Mendoza does not make poverty as an excuse for the lack of his education. He's just 9 years old but he travels from Munoz to SM North every evening to sell sampaguita garlands to support his studies. While selling, you can see him intently reading a book, regardless of how noisy the place is. He can be seen in the streets of Quezon City, SM North Edsa, and even atop footbridges just to sell his goods.
Once he's done for the day he either goes to his brother or to his mother whom both sell flowers for a living.
When a netizen interviewed him about his goals, he firmly said that he wanted to be an accountant. And with Marlon's dedication and passion for learning, there is no doubt that he can reach his dreams at one way or another.
It's sad that no matter how hard working you are, sometimes you can't really do anything about life simply because you weren't born into it. But we must continue believing in ourselves so that we may be able to reach or dreams. Someday.
You can watch the young and hard working boy in this video below.
