We complain that our viand is sometimes dry or too salty, not recognizing that such food will be considered a luxury for some.

You'd think it's quite weird that this boy is not eating int he school canteen, with his friends.
You know, it's like the sauce you put on your instant pancit canton, except without the powdered flavor pack. For some of us, it might be trivial and interesting to eat like this when we feel like it, but this boy obviously does not have a choice and not simply doing it all for fun.
Still, it is commendable how the boy is still eager to go to school, to learn and study, despite being in an underprivileged position in life.
